Pro Life & Pro Eternal Life With Sister Dede Byrne

On a recent episode of Hearts of the Holy Family, we had the tremendous privilege of speaking with Sister Deirdre “Dede” Byrne—religious sister, surgeon, Army colonel, and missionary. Sister Dede is also the sister of William Byrne, bishop of the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts, making this conversation especially meaningful for our local community.

This was far more than an interview. It was a powerful call to rediscover holiness in the home, to take seriously the spiritual battle of our time, and to live boldly as witnesses to truth.

The Life and Courage of Sister Dede Byrne, MD - A Life of Service: Sister, Soldier, Surgeon

Sister Dede’s life is nothing short of extraordinary. A graduate of Virginia Tech and Georgetown University School of Medicine, she served in the United States Army for over 30 years, retiring as a colonel. During her military service as a surgeon, she discerned her religious vocation and entered the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

Today, her mission includes caring for the poor, the uninsured, and performing missionary surgery overseas. Whether in habit, uniform, or scrubs, her life has been a complete gift of self.

Her remarkable journey is beautifully captured in the book Sister, Soldier, Surgeon, written by Lisa M. Corazon. The book tells the story of a woman who answered God’s call in every stage of life—on the battlefield, in the operating room, and in the convent. It highlights not only her accomplishments, but her deep faith, courage, and unwavering commitment to the dignity of every human life. It’s an inspiring read that brings to life the very themes she shared in this interview.

The Battle for the Family

Sister Dede spoke with urgency about the reality of spiritual warfare—especially within the family. The home is where souls are formed, and because of this, it has become a primary target of attack.

She emphasized that the enemy seeks to wound Christ by targeting His children. Whether through abortion, broken families, or moral confusion, the battle is real—and it is being fought daily in ordinary homes.

One striking point she made was that if holiness truly flourished in the home, many of society’s deepest wounds—especially abortion—would begin to disappear. The renewal of culture begins with the renewal of the family.

She also warned about the dangers of pornography, describing it as a “portal” that can invite spiritual harm into the home. Her message was clear: parents must be vigilant, intentional, and prayerful leaders.

The Rosary: A Spiritual Weapon

Throughout the conversation, one theme kept returning—the power of the Rosary.

Sister Dede shared stories from her own life, especially the witness of her father, who prayed the rosary faithfully and fervently. She spoke of how families that persevere in praying the rosary together experience a real strength and protection.

The rosary may seem simple, even repetitive—but it is anything but weak. It is a spiritual weapon.

In our own experience, this rings true. Family life is not perfect. It is filled with challenges, distractions, and struggles. But the rosary anchors the home. It invites the Blessed Mother into the heart of family life, and where she is present, grace flows.

Bringing Saint Joseph Into the Home

Because our program is rooted in devotion to the Hearts of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, we were especially encouraged by Sister Dede’s call to invite Saint Joseph into our homes.

In a world that often lacks strong fatherhood, Saint Joseph stands as a model of quiet strength, leadership, and protection. For families struggling with fatherly presence or direction, devotion to Saint Joseph can be transformative.

He is not only the protector of the Holy Family, but also a powerful intercessor for our own families—especially in times of difficulty.

The Reality of Suffering, Death, and True Compassion

One of the most profound parts of the discussion centered on suffering and the end of life.

Drawing from her experience as a physician, Sister Dede spoke clearly about euthanasia and what she calls “stealth euthanasia”—situations where care is manipulated in ways that hasten death under the guise of compassion.

She emphasized that true compassion does not eliminate suffering by eliminating the person. Instead, we are called to accompany the suffering, just as Our Lady and Saint John stood at the foot of the Cross.

She also encouraged viewers to learn more and become informed through resources such as https://sisterburle.com, a website dedicated to educating people on euthanasia and defending the dignity of life.

This work is closely connected to the witness of Sister Philip Marie Burle, a religious sister whose life and death became a powerful testimony in this area. Sister Philip Marie suffered deeply but remained faithful, offering her suffering with great love and trust in God. Her story stands in direct contrast to the culture of euthanasia, showing that even in suffering, life has profound dignity and meaning.

The Gift of a Holy Death

Sister Dede also highlighted a lesser-known but powerful gift of the Church: the Apostolic Pardon.

This special blessing, given by a priest near the moment of death, removes all temporal punishment due to sin and prepares the soul for heaven. Many Catholics are unaware of it, yet it is an incredible grace.

She urged families to be prepared—not just practically, but spiritually—for the moment of death. The final moments of life can be filled with reconciliation, healing, and grace if we allow God to work.

Living in a State of Grace

Another central theme was the importance of living in a state of sanctifying grace.

Sister Dede emphasized that we cannot fight spiritual battles effectively unless we remain close to the sacraments—especially Confession and the Eucharist.

She shared the powerful example of Joan of Arc, who prayed with humility: asking God to keep her in a state of grace if she was already there, or to place her there if she was not.

This simple prayer reflects a profound truth—we must stay close to God daily, not just in moments of crisis.

A Courageous Witness to Truth

Many came to know Sister Dede after her bold witness at the 2020 Republican National Convention, where she spoke on the sanctity of life. But as she explained, this was not something she planned—it was a response to prayer.

She had simply asked God to use her as His voice.

And when the opportunity came, she said yes.

That is the heart of her mission—and the invitation for all of us.

Final Thoughts: Sanctifying the Home

This conversation was a powerful reminder that holiness begins in the home.

It begins with prayer. It grows through the sacraments. It is strengthened through suffering offered to God.And it flourishes when families remain united to the Hearts of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

No family is perfect. Every home carries crosses. But grace is real.

And when we take seriously the call to holiness—when we pray the rosary, guard our homes, stay in a state of grace, and trust in God—our homes can become places where heaven touches earth.
